An associate degree in the US is obtained after 2 years of undergraduate study, so I guess it's like a diploma - at least that's what it would be in Ireland, where I went to school, but I don't know if a HND is the UK equivalent. And I think Bachelors degrees are roughly equivalent between the two countries, although I get the feeling that UK/Irish university courses are specialised from earlier on, and so may be more in-depth than their US equivalents. Hope that helps a bit!
